M.E. Breen grew up with dogs, cats, newts, turtles, rabbits and  rats in the woolly hills of Berkeley, California.  When she was 10 she moved with her family to London where she slept in an attic overlooking a graveyard and had two cats, Canterbury and Ham.

The family moved back to San Francisco just in time for M.E. to get up to speed on the latest in jeans-pegging and bangs-spraying, and then it was off to boarding school in Massachusetts.  It was there that M.E. put her gangly self to good use and joined the crew team. She didn’t stop rowing until she graduated from college eight years later. Rowing turns out to have been good practice for writing, since both involve getting up early in the morning and spending long periods of time hunched over like Quasimodo.

After college M.E. kicked around New York city for awhile, then went to graduate school in English Lit. She turned out to be better suited to novel writing than dissertation writing, and in 2006 she finished the first draft of her novel Darkwood. The final draft of that novel was published by Bloomsbury press in May 2009.

M.E. currently lives by Ocean Beach in San Francisco with two fat cats and a dog named Truckstop. She is working on her second novel and spends her free time coping with pet hair.
